What Constitutes a Pet Emergency?

Not all pet illnesses or injuries are emergencies, but you should contact a veterinarian near you if you are unsure about your pet’s illness or injury. We can help you determine the severity of your pet’s sickness or injury and if you need to bring it in for emergency care. Calling in advance gives your veterinarian time to prepare for your pet’s arrival so we can begin treatment without delay. You should seek emergency care immediately if your pet has the following symptoms:

•           severe vomiting or diarrhea

•           paralysis or seizures

•           wounds that are bleeding excessively

•           broken bones

•           noticeable pain and discomfort

•           disorientation

•           trouble breathing

•           blood in your pet’s stool or urine

•           difficulty urinating or pooping

Importance of Seeking Pet Emergency Care

Pets are vulnerable to several health problems and diseases, many of which can be deadly. Delayed treatment could result in significant health issues or death. Contacting your veterinarian near you and explaining your pet’s symptoms allows your vet to quickly asses and treat your pet’s condition. A sudden and unexplained change in your pet’s behavior could indicate health issues. Examples of changes in behavior include docile pets lashing out or energetic pets losing interest in activity or play. These are signs that something is amiss with your pet and that it needs veterinary care.

Benefits of Having an Emergency Vet

Every pet owner should have the number of an emergency veterinarian they can call if needed. Doing this can save time and frustration in getting your pet prompt care when needed. Pet emergencies can happen at any time, so being prepared is vital to keep your pet healthy. Bay Road Animal Hospital in Sarasota, FL, has the resources to handle several pet emergencies that may arise. Working with an experienced emergency veterinarian will ensure your pet gets prompt and effective care.
