What to Know Before Boarding Your Pet

It is estimated that 67 percent of all households in America own pets. What will happen to your pet when you have to leave town for a while? If you cannot find a trusted pet sitter, then you need a pet boarding service or kennel. Our veterinarians at Bay Road Animal Hospital in Sarasota would like to offer a few tips on finding a good pet boarding service.

Ask Your Veterinarian

The first person you need to ask about a good pet boarding service should be your vet. Many veterinarians have boarding available. If you like the veterinary services provided at your vet’s office, then you know that your pet will be taken care of properly. If the vet does not offer boarding services, he or she will know of local places with good reputations.

Reviews and Recommendations

Ask for recommendations from your trusted friends, family members, and neighbors. When you get a name, go online to check for reviews on websites like the Better Business Bureau. Pay close attention to recent reviews, since that information is a more accurate reflection of how the pet boarding facility will operate during your pet’s stay.

What to Ask During the Phone Call

Call the prospective pet boarding facility and ask what medical paperwork is required for your pet. If none is required, hang up and try somewhere else. If you have a dog or cat that has not been spayed or neutered, ask if they have experience handling these types of pets. Most pet boarding facilities will not accept entire dogs or cats, because of their penchant for fighting.

Visiting the Pet Boarding Facility

The next step is to visit the pet boarding facility. Take a good smell. It should not have much of a smell at all. See if the pets look healthy and happy. Check if the facility is temperature-controlled. There should be secure fencing for any areas where the dogs exercise.
