Lameness & Limping

When you have a pet, you love them like a family member. One of your responsibilities as a pet parent is to help your pet stay healthy. If you live near Sarasota, FL, and are looking for a veterinarian, our team at Bay Road Animal Hospital would love to meet your furry friend. We’ve been caring for pets in your area since 1961.

Lameness & Limping

As you watch your pet walk or play, you may become concerned if you see your pet limping or favoring one of their paws or legs. This could be due to an injury that caused a sprain or strain, or a bite from an insect or another pet. Call the veterinarian’s office if you’re unsure whether the limp requires an immediate visit. While waiting for your pet’s appointment, you should provide them with a low, soft bed for rest and carry them to the car when it’s time to go to the vet.

Pet Diagnosis and Treatment for Limping and Lameness

If your pet is experiencing profuse bleeding or has sustained an obvious fracture, it is considered an emergency. If your pet is unable to walk, you should also consider this lameness an emergency. When your pet arrives, our vet will examine them and try to determine the cause of the impairment in their gait. If the vet suspects a fracture, they may recommend an X-ray of the area.

Treatment for your pet’s limpness or lameness will depend on the underlying cause. According to The Spruce Pets, never give your pet over-the-counter medication unless advised by the vet. If your dog needs pain medication, your vet will prescribe the appropriate medication at the correct dosage. In some cases, your pet may be referred to a veterinary surgeon for surgery.
