Common Pet Emergencies

At Bay Road Animal Hospital in Sarasota, FL, our vet team proudly serves the community with quality pet care. In our time, we've seen our share of emergencies. Sometimes, our clients will call us when their pet is sick or injured, unsure if it's a true emergency. We get it, our pets obviously can't tell us when they feel bad, and it's instinct for them to try and hide any weakness.

Symptoms to Watch for

Don’t feel bad about calling us if you're unsure. We'd much rather tell you it's nothing or have you come in, then have an issue progress because you were too embarrassed to call. That being said, we've provided a list of pet symptoms or conditions that may require immediate attention from at a vet clinic or emergency vet:

1. Severe bleeding that doesn't stop in a few minutes. Especially from the eyes, ears, mouth, or rectum.

2. Difficulty breathing, choking, or gagging that won't stop.

3. An animal bite.

4. Any injury to the eyes.

5. Ingestion of poison

6. Inability to urinate

7. Seizure or uncontrollable tremors/shaking

8. Heatstroke/Dehydration

9. Refusing to eat or drink for more than 24 hours

10. Inability to walk

11. Unsteady gait (appearing drunk)

12. Obvious pain (limping, crying, whining)

13. Blunt trauma from a car accident, fall, or being hit by an object.

14. Allergic reaction to an insect sting (swelling, drooling, hives)

15. Loss of consciousness

Contact our team if any of these issues occur while we are available. We will advise you of the best way to transport your pet to their facility. It will also give us the opportunity to prepare for your pet's arrival, so he can receive prompt and appropriate treatment.
