As part of your pet’s health plan, our animal hospital recommends preventative techniques for parasite control. Florida has many common parasites that can be easily prevented with monthly medications. Here are some parasites that are common in Sarasota and can affect both cats and dogs:
- Heartworms
- Hookworms
- Roundworms
- Whipworms
- Tapeworms
The problems that these parasites cause vary depending on the parasite. Heartworm disease, carried by misquitoes, causes heart disease and possibly death if untreated, and other intestinal parasites cause severe bleeding. Using preventative medication is a lot easier than treating these parasites as they arrive, both on your pet’s health and on your pocketbook. On top of using preventative medication, our laboratory checks your pet’s blood yearly for microscopic evidence of parasites. If caught early enough, parasites can usually be treated.
